Bryson DeChambeau made Winged Foot’s rough look too easy. His distance beat the setup; golf course crews still carry the cost while the ball rollback waits.
Bryson DeChambeau hit just 23 of 56 fairways at the 2020 U.S. Open and won by six shots. His plan was to drive far enough that a pitching wedge could do the work a long iron couldn’t. Winged Foot Golf Club still punished almost everyone else: DeChambeau was the only player under par for the week. His power mattered, but so did the approach shots and short game that turned the strategy into a championship.
The golf course superintendent’s view starts months before that Sunday. Stephen Rabideau’s team had helped restore Winged Foot with Gil Hanse, then faced a U.S. Open moved from June to September. Championship rough had to survive summer heat, watering and disease pressure, while shorter September days squeezed the crew’s work. They maintained the penalty; Bryson changed the club he needed to escape it. That is the maintenance story behind the highlight reel.
The distance argument was already underway before Bryson won. The USGA and The R&A released their Distance Insights findings in February 2020, then announced new golf-ball testing standards in December 2023. In June 2026, the governing bodies and leading tours delayed changes to the Overall Distance Standard until January 2030 at the earliest. September brought more proposals, not final rules. Meanwhile, courses still have to manage the ground that longer hitting demands. Bryson’s win made the problem visible; it didn’t start the debate, and it didn’t settle who should pay.
