Dustin Johnson lost a major playoff spot in sand surrounded by spectators. The Whistling Straits bunker ruling has a maintenance story behind it.
Dustin Johnson reached the final hole of the 2010 PGA Championship with a one-shot lead. His drive finished outside the ropes at Whistling Straits, where spectators crowded around a trampled patch of sand. He grounded his club, played on and thought his closing bogey had earned a playoff. The two-stroke penalty turned that bogey into a seven, leaving Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson to settle the championship without him.
The explanation reaches back to Pete Dye’s course design and the work required to keep it playable. Whistling Straits had about a thousand bunkers, including areas that looked very different from the prepared hazards golfers expect. Daily raking covered bunkers inside the ropes. The PGA of America’s notice also applied to built bunkers outside them. Golf course maintenance and tournament rules drew different boundaries, and Johnson’s ball finished where that distinction was hardest to recognize.
The PGA used a different approach at Kiawah Island, treating its sandy areas as waste areas. When the championship returned to Whistling Straits in 2015, a hospitality platform covered part of Johnson’s bunker and nearby bunkers had been reshaped. The rule remained. The story behind the penalty is how a course can change what a player sees while the rules sheet continues to call it the same thing.
