The Truth About Johnny Miller’s 63 (It Wasn’t the Sprinklers)

Johnny Miller’s 63 wasn’t a sprinkler-assisted fluke. The Oakmont watering error happened before Friday’s round. The maintenance record changes the story.

At Oakmont Country Club in 1973, a routine five-minute wash of the greens went wrong overnight. Friday brought unusually low scoring, including a course-record 65 from club professional Gene Borek. That real malfunction became attached to a different round: Johnny Miller’s Sunday 63. The dates matter, because the familiar explanation gives the wrong day’s conditions credit for one of golf’s greatest performances.

Miller began the final round six shots behind and birdied the first four holes. Looking back, he described long irons running across Oakmont’s greens, while historians Adam Lazarus and Steve Schlossman found that Sunday’s scoring did not show an unusually easy course. Miller won by one with the first 63 in a major championship. The sprinkler story survived anyway, helped along by later recollections that blurred the sequence of events.

A year later, the Massacre at Winged Foot gave the story a second life. Sandy Tatum denied that the USGA’s setup was revenge for Miller’s win. Superintendent Ted Horton’s account points instead to the work: four new rotary mowers, unusually uniform rough, close-cut greens and daily rolling. Hale Irwin won at seven over. From Oakmont’s watering mistake to Winged Foot’s deliberately demanding surfaces, this is the maintenance side of two U.S. Opens—and the decisions your own superintendent still makes before you arrive.
