The Truth About Bryson at Bay Hill

Bryson DeChambeau could clear Bay Hill’s lake. For two rounds, he refused. The wind and the course setup explain what changed.

The gallery wanted a show at the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational. Bryson had already promised to take on Bay Hill’s sixth hole, but two balls in the water during Wednesday’s pro-am showed what the gamble could cost. He played the safer route on Thursday and Friday while fans begged him to go. The distance was only part of the calculation: every yard over that lake had to be carried through the air.

Behind the tee was another story. Bay Hill’s grounds crew, led by Chris Flynn, had spent the winter preparing a course where tournament officials could choose different tees each day. Celebration bermudagrass fairways, prepared landing areas and changing tee positions shaped the challenge. The crew could prepare the playing surfaces. It could not choose the wind Bryson would face.

When the conditions changed, so did his line. Saturday brought a 370-yard drive across the water; Sunday brought 377 yards in total and a fairway bunker 88 yards from the flag. Lee Westwood took the safer route and matched his birdie. Bryson still had to survive the rest of Bay Hill to win by one. The lake drive became the highlight, but the decisions before it—and the course around it—explain the victory.
