The two architects everyone credits for the way Shinnecock Hills looks today barely touched its trees. Bill Coore said so himself. There really wasn’t that much to do, he told Kingdom Magazine — our work was mainly to realign some fairways. The wide, treeless, wind-scoured links you’ll watch at the 2026 U.S. Open was not their doing. It was the work of three golf course superintendents, across more than twenty years, and almost nobody watching knows their names.
You know Coore and Crenshaw. Pinehurst No. 2. Sand Hills. Friar’s Head. The most celebrated restoration team in American golf. When Shinnecock reopened wide and firm and fast for the 2018 U.S. Open, the credit went where credit usually goes — to the famous names on the scorecard. Brooks Koepka won that year. The course measured 7,440 yards. And the story everyone told was a story about architects rediscovering William Flynn’s 1931 design.
That story is mostly wrong. Not about the design. About who did the cutting, and why.
What Isn’t There: The Missing Trees
Walk Shinnecock now and the first thing you notice is what isn’t there. Trees. The course sits on open glacial moraine above the Atlantic, and the wind has free run of all of it. In 2004, when the U.S. Open was last held here before 2018, the property looked different. Mid-century, like most American clubs, Shinnecock had planted. Trees framed holes. They lined corridors. They narrowed sightlines and — though you’d never have thought about it this way from the tee — they sat on the grass like a lid.
That last part is the part you’ve never been told. And it’s the reason this is a maintenance story, not an architecture story.
How One Tree Starves a Green
A tree next to a putting surface does three things, and none of them are visible from the tee. It blocks sunlight. It blocks air. And it holds moisture against the turf long after the sun is up. The USGA Green Section has documented the mechanism for decades. Most turf species need at least eight hours of direct sunlight a day to hold density. Shade below that threshold thins the canopy, extends the hours that water sits on the leaf, and turns the area into a place where disease wants to live. A shaded green doesn’t just grow slower. It stays wet longer, and wet turf is vulnerable turf.
Air is the half of it nobody pictures. Trees don’t only cast shade. They wall off wind. Turf regulates its own temperature partly by evaporation — the same way your skin does — and that process stalls when the air around the leaf goes still. Restrict the airflow and the canopy can’t dry after dew, can’t shed heat in summer, can’t recover after rain. The USGA’s own agronomists put it plainly in a piece called “A Decision Tree for Tree Removal.” Trees too close to the turf create a pocketed environment, and in a pocketed environment, turf health suffers. Sun. Air. Moisture. Three levers, and a single tree pulls all three the wrong way.
There’s a more precise way to measure the problem than counting hours, and turf researchers use it. They call it the daily light integral — the total number of photons a patch of grass actually collects over a day, measured in moles per square meter. The USGA’s research is blunt about why this matters. Grass doesn’t respond to a tidy number of sunlight hours. It responds to the cumulative light it banks, and a canopy under a tree can run far below what it needs while still looking fine to a golfer walking past at noon. The grass knows the difference long before the eye does. By the time thinning shows on the surface, the plant has been running a deficit for weeks. Shade doesn’t kill turf in an afternoon. It starves it slowly, on the early morning edges, exactly where the low sun should be drying the dew and waking the grass up.
Why Fescue Can’t Live in Shade
Hold that against what Shinnecock actually is. The signature surface here is fine fescue — the wispy native rough that defines the look of a true links. Fescue wants exactly what trees take away. It wants sun, wind, and a dry root zone. It is a grass built for an exposed, sandy, wind-raked coast, and for most of the twentieth century Shinnecock had been slowly burying it under shade.
The last time the U.S. Open came here before the restoration era, in 2004, the course showed the world what happens when the moisture math goes wrong in the other direction. The greens baked out. The seventh hole became nearly unplayable, the surface so dry and firm that good shots wouldn’t hold. The grasses going into that championship were essentially meadow turf — rye and Poa annua, broad-leaved and poorly suited to drought — watered by a twenty-year-old irrigation system that could only broadcast water from a distance instead of spotting it where it was needed. The USGA took the blame, and it deserved a share. But the deeper problem was a course whose turf and water control weren’t built for the exposed, fast conditions a links is supposed to deliver. Trees sat in the middle of that equation, and trees were what came out.
Three Superintendents, 500 Trees
So somebody started cutting. Not in 2012, and not because two architects showed up. The removal began years earlier, under a superintendent named Pete Smith, who worked with the club’s Greens Committee to take out trees and reopen the old beachy vistas. His successor, Mark Michaud, kept going, pairing tree removal with green expansion. And when Jon Jennings arrived from Chicago Golf Club, around 2010, he carried the same program through to the U.S. Open. Three men. One sustained decision, repeated over and over, against decades of inherited tree-planting fashion. Take the lid off. Give the grass back its sun and its wind.
If you want to know whether it worked, listen to the people who maintain it rather than the people who play it. A member of Shinnecock’s agronomy team told the Riverhead News-Review that removing the trees had given the turf good sunlight and air movement — that it meant less maintenance, that it kept the grass healthy and happy. That’s the whole thesis in one quiet sentence. Less shade, more air, drier surface, less work, better turf. The wide-open look you admire is the byproduct. The agronomy was the point.
There’s a cost to taking a tree down, and the superintendents knew it before they started. Turf that has grown for years under shade adapts to that shade. Pull the canopy off suddenly and you can shock it. The USGA has flagged exactly this — that Poa annua acclimated to a densely shaded environment can decline when it’s abruptly exposed to full sun. So the removal couldn’t be reckless. It had to be staged, tree by tree, season by season, giving the grass beneath time to adjust to light it hadn’t seen in decades. And the trees themselves weren’t simply destroyed. The eastern red cedars and black pines pulled from the interior were replanted along the north fence line with a ninety-inch spade, rebuilt into a windbreak between the course and the houses beyond it. They didn’t just delete trees. They relocated the problem to where it couldn’t shade a putting surface, and used the same trees that had hurt the turf to screen the property line instead.
Augusta Keeps Its Trees. Shinnecock Cut Them.
This is where Shinnecock and Augusta National split in opposite directions, and the contrast tells you everything about how the two clubs think.
Augusta keeps its trees. Famously. The most famous tree in American golf stood on Augusta’s seventeenth hole for most of a century — a loblolly pine roughly sixty-five feet tall, sitting about 210 yards off the tee, right where a President of the United States kept hitting it. Dwight Eisenhower, an Augusta member, lobbied the club to cut it down. The club refused. They named it the Eisenhower Tree instead and kept it standing for decades, valuing the tradition over the playability. It only came down in 2014, and only because an ice storm did what the membership never would. That is the Augusta instinct. Protect the tree. Engineer around it. When the microclimate fights the agronomy, Augusta spends its way out, burying systems beneath the surface to control moisture and air that a tree would otherwise dictate.
Shinnecock did the reverse. It didn’t engineer around the trees. It removed them, and let the wind off the Atlantic do the work that Augusta does with infrastructure. Same variable — sun, air, the microclimate at the surface. Opposite method. Augusta controls its environment by addition. Shinnecock controlled its by subtraction. One club spends to hold conditions in place. The other took the lid off and trusted the site to regulate itself.
By the time the championship returned, more than 500 trees had come off the property, and the fairways tell the rest of the story in numbers. They had been squeezed to an average of about 26 yards wide across the 1986, 1995, and 2004 Opens. After the tree removal and the restoration work they widened toward 65 yards, before the USGA pulled them back to an average of about 41 for 2018 by replacing some 200,000 square feet of short grass with fescue. Width came back. Angles came back. And the wind, finally, had somewhere to go.
The Oak by Your Own Green
Restoring a links isn’t a thing you do in a single project with a famous name attached. The tree removal at Shinnecock was slow, unglamorous, and spread across three superintendents who will never be on a magazine cover. Coore and Crenshaw consulted on tees and angles — seventeen new tees, the fairway widths, the run-offs on a few severe greens. The fourteenth and sixteenth holes each gained 76 yards. Real work, but not the trees. The trees were a maintenance decision, made in increments, by the people whose job is the grass and not the layout.
You can see the same fork on your own course, just smaller. The problem oak beside your home green isn’t a design feature. It’s an agronomic decision, already run against the same eight hours of sun, the same morning drying, the same still pocket of air your fescue or your bentgrass or your Poa annua is fighting every day. No architect required. No U.S. Open on the calendar. Just the quiet arithmetic of light and wind and water that decides whether grass lives. The wide, windswept course you’ll watch this June wasn’t restored by the names you know. It was uncovered, one tree at a time, by the ones you don’t.
