St Andrews Greens Are A 200-Year Accident

Augusta National has eighteen greens. One for every hole. Each one sits over a buried system that pulls water down through the soil and pushes air back up, green by green, on demand. Across an ocean, in Scotland, the home of golf has eleven. Eleven greens, for eighteen holes. No buried system. The golf course superintendent who keeps them is a man named Jon Wood. He is only the tenth keeper of the green since Old Tom Morris took the job in 1864.

Those eleven greens are not normal greens. Seven of them are shared — two different holes, two flags, one enormous surface of grass in between. The largest of those shared greens runs more than a hundred yards from end to end. It covers 37,846 square feet. That is larger than the floor of Westminster Abbey. And one crew has to keep all of it true.

You have watched this golf course on television. Almost every golfer has. The Open Championship returns to St Andrews every five years, and the cameras pan across those vast greens without ever explaining them. You see two flags on one green, and your eye slides right past it. You watch a player stand over a putt of eighty, ninety, a hundred feet, and you assume the green is simply big. You never ask why. The answer is the most surprising thing about the most famous course in the game.

Eighteen Holes, Eleven Greens

Eighteen holes. Eleven greens. Four of those holes get their own green: the first, the ninth, the seventeenth, and the eighteenth. The other fourteen holes share. Holes two and sixteen share a green. Three and fifteen. Four and fourteen. Five and thirteen. Every pair of numbers on a shared green adds up to eighteen, every single time. That is not a coincidence, and it is not a design. It is a fossil — a record of how this course came to be, frozen into the grass.

The average green at St Andrews covers more than 22,000 square feet. More than half an acre. Split the seven double greens straight down the middle, and each half still averages about 13,600 square feet. That is more than twice the size of a green at Augusta National, where the average is roughly 6,400 square feet. Pebble Beach averages 3,500. The greens you play at home are smaller still. And every one of them is hard enough to keep alive.

The numbers run in both directions. The smallest green on the course belongs to the seventeenth, the famous Road Hole, at just over 7,000 square feet. The largest single green, the eighteenth, covers more than 15,000. And it is not only the greens that are oversized. The first and eighteenth holes share a fairway that is 129 yards wide, the widest in the game. The shared fairways follow their own rule: their two hole numbers always add up to nineteen.

The Grass St Andrews Was Born With

The grass is fescue — fine fescue, mostly. A blend of slender creeping red fescue and chewings fescue, with browntop bent worked in over the top. It is the grass the links was born with. It is also the grass the St Andrews Links Trust spends most of its effort defending. Fescue is slow. Fescue is firm. It grows low to the ground, it tolerates wind and salt and sand, and it asks for very little water. On a links, that is the entire point. The ball is supposed to land, release, and run.

But fescue has an enemy, and the enemy is foot traffic. The Old Course is public. It takes more than 50,000 rounds a year. Fifty thousand sets of spikes, dragging across surfaces this size, day after day, in the wind and the rain. Under that kind of wear, fescue thins. And when fescue thins, a weaker grass moves in to fill the gap: annual meadow grass. Poa annua. The grass every links greenkeeper in the world is fighting.

So the crew overseeds. Twice a year, every year, they cut thousands of tiny grooves and dimples into those greens and drop fresh fescue seed into them. On a course with this much play, the grass cover has to be rebuilt almost as fast as it wears away. Very few courses on earth overseed their greens this aggressively. St Andrews has no choice. The traffic never stops.

Sand, Seed, and the Science of the Surface

The seed itself has changed with the science. The crew still leans on fescue. But it now works bentgrass into the weaker areas. Bent comes out of a Scottish winter faster than fescue does, and it holds a better surface through the cold months. The Links Trust has overseeded with bentgrass varieties chosen for fine leaves and disease tolerance — varieties called Charles and BarKing, names that mean nothing to a golfer and everything to a greenkeeper. The grass on these greens is, quietly, a moving target.

Then there is the sand. Old Tom Morris, the man regarded as the father of modern greenkeeping, worked something out here more than a century ago: spread a thin layer of sand across a green, and the fine grasses thrive while the surface gets firmer. He called it topdressing. St Andrews still does it, lightly and constantly — a dusting every week or two. The Trust puts down around 300 tons of sand a year across its greens, tees, and surrounds. That sand is not cosmetic. It controls the thin layer of living and dead organic matter just below the surface, and that layer is what decides whether a green is firm or soft, fast or slow, true or bumpy.

The feeding is just as deliberate. When the current era of management began, the greens were underfed, and the surfaces went bumpy whenever they dried out. Fertility was pushed up hard, by more than half, to build a stronger root and a thicker sward. Then it was carefully dialed back once the surfaces held. Phosphate goes down in the autumn to help the turf fight the diseases that come with a wet Scottish winter. The greens are aerated twice a year, punched full of holes to relieve the compaction that all that play drives into the soil. None of it shows on television. All of it is the reason the greens survive at all.

The Problem of Scale

There is one more defense, and it is the oldest one. The Old Course closes every Sunday. No golf, by tradition, going back centuries. The USGA Green Section has pointed to the practice as a model for course recovery. Old Tom Morris, asked to open the links on the day of rest, refused. The course needs a rest, he said, even if the golfers don’t. On a course with this much play, a single quiet day is not sentiment. It is maintenance.

Now the size becomes the real problem. On a 6,000 square foot green, keeping the surface consistent is already hard. On a green of 37,000 square feet, it is a different kind of hard. The moisture is never uniform. One end sits lower and holds water. The other end drains and dries out in the wind. The grass on one side catches more sun than the grass on the other. A green that large is really several small climates pretending to be one putting surface. The job is to make a ball roll the same way across all of it, when nothing underneath it is the same.

The crew at St Andrews has said this plainly. On the double greens, there are unavoidable variations across the surface. The whole overseeding and topdressing program exists to pull those variations closer together. The aim is for the green to play as one piece, as a golfer walks across it. That is the quiet war on those greens — not against the golfer, but against the green’s own size.

Speed is part of the same fight. For everyday play, the greens at St Andrews run between nine and nine and a half feet on the Stimpmeter. For a tournament, the crew pushes that to ten and a half. They do it by cutting the greens twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. By American standards, that is slow. It is slow on purpose. A faster green of that size would be impossible to putt. A downhill putt of a hundred feet, on a green running thirteen, would run yards past the hole.

Why the Greens Are This Size at All

Golf has been played on this strip of Scottish coast for centuries. In the beginning it was barely a course at all — a narrow track hacked through gorse and heather, running out toward the Eden Estuary and back to the town. There was one hole cut in each patch of turf. Golfers played out to it, then turned and played back to it, aiming at the same hole in both directions. For a while, this worked.

Then golf got popular. Golfers heading out to the far end started meeting golfers coming back. Both groups aimed at the same hole, on the same green, at the same moment. It caused exactly what you would expect: collisions, arguments, long delays. The fix was crude and brilliant at the same time. They cut a second hole in each green — one hole and one flag for players heading out, a second hole and flag for players coming in. White flags for the way out, red flags for the way back, a convention the course still uses today. And to hold two holes and two directions of play, the greens were widened. Widened again, and again, until they became the enormous shared surfaces you see now.

Until 1764 the course had twenty-two holes. The members combined several of the short ones and arrived at eighteen. That is the reason every course you have ever played has eighteen holes, and not some other number. Then, in the 1860s and 1870s, Old Tom Morris separated the first green from the seventeenth. He built the first and last greens roughly as they stand today. Nobody ever sat down and designed seven double greens. They are the scar tissue of a course that grew, fix by fix, around its own crowds.

Augusta National vs. St Andrews: Same Science, Different Scale

Augusta National maintains eighteen separate greens. Each one is small. Each one sits over its own SubAir system, tuned green by green, by a large crew with a famous budget. Augusta does all of it for one tournament a year, then closes the course for months to let it recover. St Andrews maintains eleven greens. Seven of them are shared. Several are larger than anything at Augusta. There are no buried machines. The course is public, it takes 50,000 rounds a year, and it rests just one day a week.

Same grass science. The same fight against moisture, organic matter, and wear. Augusta solved it with engineering under the ground. St Andrews solved it with sand, fescue, water by hand, and a crew that knows every hollow in half an acre of grass. The scale is the whole story.

Your home course has greens of maybe 6,000 square feet. And it has one crew that fights to keep even those rolling true through a single season. St Andrews keeps surfaces six times that size consistent — consistent enough that a golfer can lag a putt from a hundred feet and leave it dead by the hole. One writer who moved to St Andrews said the only part of his game that improved was learning to two-putt from a hundred feet. A skill that is completely useless on the other 35,000 courses on the planet. That is what those greens demand. Not because anyone designed them to. Because centuries of golfers, trying to share one strip of grass, left behind some of the hardest greens in the world to keep. And eleven of them is all St Andrews has ever needed.
